Participants will be invited to submit proposals and apply for a grant to implement actions. The grants will support participants with the implementation of their own initiatives. The call for proposals will focus on democratic transformation and will be divided in two thematic areas. The criteria will include both an evaluation of the commitment and previous contributions of the applicant(s) as well as evaluation of the potential of their proposed activities to serve the wider dissemination of the ideas, the change of attitudes and participation levels of youth and the sustainability of the project at large. The call will open after the completion of the first global webinar (Q6). The 5 proposals with the higher score will be awarded a grant to implement their actions (one per region) in Q8.

===Concrete results expected / Monitoring===
The call is expected to motivate participants to develop their own ideas and explore opportunities to implement their work. FWC will create the guidelines for the application process and will be responsible for monitoring the procedure.

===Follow-up Actions===
After the award of the grants, participants will proceed with the implementation of their project proposals. The grants will secure that at least 5 proposals will be further implemented after the completion of the project.

The Action plans were a result of the Action groups’ work, which was generated on the final day of each Co-Laboratory. The participants of the action groups co-created action plans, which serve as guidelines for advocate actions. The number of proposals that have a high influence on the MAP determined the number of action groups and action plans per region. The interested participants decided which proposals they would like to join. During the event, selected participants were trained to act as multipliers to support and maintain the ideas of their respective groups. It is important to note that these action groups are the primary force of the envisioned results because the actions come from the participants themselves and they are the multipliers of the effectiveness to enhance coherence on a regional and global level.

===Concrete results / Monitoring===
Each action group created an action plan, which offered the guidelines for action with the ultimate goal to increase youth participation in democratic processes. The trained participants monitored the actions of the group and with the support of the project partners, implemented the foreseen actions. FWC assisted in the reporting from the regional partners to conclude the overall result. The process was supported by the regional webinars on participatory democracy.

===Follow-up Actions===
Participants were encouraged and supported to build on their actions and update their plans. The results of their work could also contribute to the content of the e-books. The action groups are supported by the implementing partners and the lead applicant in disseminating these actions to the respective authorities. One individual, chosen by each respective group, will assume the responsibility to coordinate communications. This individual will receive a small grant.

The ideas and suggestions from the participants of the Co-Laboratories are concluded in a draft Manifesto for 21st Century developed by the FWC and named “Requirements of a new system of democracy”. The Manifesto is expected to be launched during the final two quarters of the second year in an e-form and will be used as an advocacy tool to raise awareness on the actions and factors which will increase youth participation in an ideal future system of governance. Participants are encouraged and supported to approach policy-makers in their home-countries and invite them to read the Manifesto for 21st Century Democracy. It could be the first globally coordinated action that challenges the current system of democracy and gives youth a voice officially rather than staying passive towards a problematic situation.

===Concrete results / Monitoring===
The Manifesto will help to establish a relationship and create a dialogue with the policy-makers, about youth’s participation in democratic processes. Moreover, it gives youth a way to move near policy makers and freely express their ideas and goals with the hope of changing the system. The result will be monitored by regional implementing partners and the result will be collected by FWC. Success stories will be shared on the Global FacebookTM group. The number of downloads will measure the interest and outreach.

===Follow-up Actions===
The manifesto will serve as “teaser” and tool to engage the media, i.e., invite project participants together with local political personalities to discuss the results of the project and the manifesto proposals. It will thus facilitate the creation of new networks that connect youth and citizens with policymakers. All participants will be encouraged to approach and engage policymakers in their respective regions. The project team will offer support and guidance where needed, and will also approach organizations within its global network to further promote the manifesto.

After the co-Laboratories, the youth participants collectively authored an e-book “50 Proposals for Action towards designing ideal future systems of governance that increase youth participation”. This Book was edited for homogeneity and clarity by the FWC team: All participants (those who took part physically as well as virtually in each Co-Laboratory) gradually developed a clear, but more importantly, shared understanding and shared language to communicate their thoughts, ideas, and desires. The resulting Action Map from their Co-Laboratory highlights the action with the maximum influence. On the last day, the facilitators worked with them to extract the 10 most influential actions and re-word them in a way that makes them more explicit, understandable, and concise. At least one person assumed responsibility for expanding and editing each idea after the conclusion of the Co-Laboratory. The FWC team then compiled the 50 top contributions into an eBook and sent it to all participants for additions, comments, and edits. This process continued for a few iterations until the eBook reached the level required for sharing it with the wider public. Through these well-written essays, they have the opportunity to share their ideas worldwide and mobilize the public to address the complex global challenges. The e-book has been launched during the last two quarters of the second year and is available online at both the project’s website and the organization website. The preparation and publication of the book increased the enthusiasm of the participating youth. The formal publication validated and “proves” that their ideas, opinions, and suggestions are recognized publicly and they were contributing as first steps in changing their world. It also demonstrates the possibility of authoring a book collectively and promoting the collective wisdom of many all over the world. The impact is measured by considering the number of participants who were responsible for the arrangement of face-to-face events such as e-book presentation events as well as virtual events (e.g., via FacebookTM). Secondly, young people became more interested in the democratic process since they were provided with practical tools and means of engagement. This is measured by considering the number of people who participate in such face-to-face events (i.e., panel discussions, radio or TV programs etc.), as well as virtual ones (e.g., FacebookTM). Also, the number of downloads of the e-book can be used to measure its dissemination.

After editing the e-book, participants are encouraged to arrange book presentation events, panel discussions, radio and TV programs, in their respective countries in order to disseminate the ideas put forward in the e-books.

Participants of the Co-Laboratories and their Facebook™ friends are encouraged to create a Global Democracy Facebook™ Group in order to discuss democracy and express their thoughts freely, regardless of gender or nationality. FWC is monitoring the discussions as to ensure adequate representation. When necessary, FWC will open new topics to encourage dialogue and reflecting on learning. The video clips (Output 2.1) and the e-book (Output 1.3) have been posted in this group to facilitate global attention and engage a wider audience.

Democracy-related topics were discussed among youth on a global level, that knowledge was shared and the discussions mobilized youth to get engaged and to take action in their home-countries. The discussions empowered the youth to express themselves freely through the support of others and to create their own campaigns which have been posted on the FacebookTM group. The effectiveness and impact of the campaigns and discussion threads can be measured by collecting the number of group members, “likes” and “shares” of campaigns, analyzing comments and if new campaigns and activities have risen from the discussions.

FWC has found a new moderator(s)/ admin(s)to ensure keeping the group and the discussions alive.

Output 2.3: A promotional video clip promoting young people’s voice produced and shared globally in social and traditional media

The FWC used selected clips from the co-Laboratory products and the “50 Proposals for Action towards designing ideal future systems of governance” video-clips (Output 2.1) and produced a professional video clip to widely promote key ideas and goals. The selection strategy took into account geographical spread, gender, ethnicity, video quality and of course clarity of messages. The final video product was produced after completion of all co-Labs by a Consultant and will be uploaded to all project-related social media as well as Future World’s websites and YouTube.

The public at large will have the opportunity to see and listen to the ideas of young people, clearly formulated and stated in ways that can have an impact on youth participation and democratic governance. The number of times played plus the estimated viewers are good measures to monitor outreach.

The link of the video product will be shared with our global networks and partner organizations and promoted also through social media.

After the co-Laboratories, the participants were motivated to share all video clips uploaded on YouTubeTM either via our app or via social media to their friends. Then the best video clip competition was carried out. The voting was done by counting the number of likes per video through both the app and the webpage used to facilitate the video clips.

===Concrete results / Monitoring===
The most important expected result from the best video clip competition was to reach out to and engage as many youths as possible in an effective way using innovative social media. This can be measured by collecting numbers of “likes”, “comments” and “shares” of each of the video clip. These numbers can show the level of mobilization of the crowd and could be a proof that youth do not have really lost interest in politics but contrarily the current system of governance is blamed for that since it does not let them be engaged as much as they want to.

===Follow-up Actions===
Every participant was asked to share the winning video clip with her/his friends via social media such as FacebookTM, TwitterTM etc., or invite their friends to download a related app. This was a major step toward mobilizing the public about worldwide challenges and somehow engaging them in political life. The winning clip was also published on FWC’s website and promoted in all follow-up advocacy initiatives.

During the co-Laboratories, the participants were asked to respond to the following triggering question: What actions can youth take towards developing a more participatory system of governance? After that, each participant wrote down her/his thoughts and ideas and then s/he used the IdeaPrism™ App (developed by FWC to support online collection of ideas and available for free on Apple and Google Stores) to videotape 1-min video clip of her/his responses and upload it on YouTubeTM. The 50 final clips represented the balance of gender, social economic status and ethnicity balance of the participants in the Co-Laboratories.

===Concrete results / Monitoring===
Through video clips on YouTubeTM, several positive results were expected and realised. The most important result was that the youth mobilize the world to take action to increase people’s participation and say in election processes, against corruption and the rise of racism and violence – in order to reinvent democracy for all. The effectiveness and impact of this mobilization were measured by collecting the number “likes”, “comments” and “shares” of videos on YouTubeTM.

===Follow-up Actions===
Even during each co-Laboratory the participants’ ideas were available on YouTubeTM as mini video clips. Thus, not only everybody participating in the face-to-face and also in the parallel virtual sessions was able to view them, “like” or “unlike” an idea or even “comment” on this or “share” it with others, but also this was an effective way for the events to be disseminated to the wider public. The video clips were also shared through FWC’s mailing lists, as well as through the mailing lists of the participants. Likes and comment were used for possible follow-up projects. A Best video clip competition (Output 2.2) was announced to promote the sharing of the clips.

Global webinars on participatory democracy took place during the implementation of the project. The webinars ensured the global coordination of the project outputs and gave participants the opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas on topics of common interest. The global webinars supported and encouraged communication among the participants in an effort to empower youth to actively participate in the democratic processes. The webinars were organized using standard technologies (available to FWC) and the results uploaded to the public cloud for open access. The first Global webinar took place after the Co-Labs in Europe, Africa and the Americas (Q5) were implemented and invited participants from those regions. The final Global webinar took place at the end of the project (Q8) and included participants from all continents.

FWC and the project partners invited participants to join the Global webinars. Through an online platform, participants had the chance to interact with each other and share ideas on joint action. The expectation was to encourage continuous contact and support between participants after project completion. The webinars were supported monitored by FWC and the project partners.

A number of regional webinars were held in the framework of the project and after the Co-Labs being held. The first webinar aimed at introducing participants to the project and the concept of participatory democracy and addressed issues on media literacy. The following webinars focused on increasing interaction among the participants and worked as platforms for exchanging ideas and worked on country specific activities. In addition, the webinars served as a tool for discussing topics of interests and sharing success stories. Overall, the webinars supported participants to complete their follow up activities. Moreover, these webinars participants were invited to discuss the progress of their action plans. Thus, webinars ensured interactive participation among the participants and the smooth operation of the process. Due to the time frame, three Webinars with participants from Europe/ Africa/ the Americas, and two Webinars with participants from Asia/ the Arab States – in total 13 regional Webinars were organized.

All participants were invited by the regional partners to join the regional webinars on participatory democracy. The expectation was that the continuity of discussion and shared experiences would improve the effectiveness of the implementation of the action plans. Participants interacted on an online platform and the discussion was monitored by both the regional partners and FWC. With the support of the implementing parties, participants worked on follow-up actions. FWC concluded the content/ result of the Webinars in meeting reports and follow-up the result of the action plans with the regional partners.

This significantly enlarged the total number of participants and increased the validation of the results during each Co-Laboratory. Since participants themselves were representing a diverse mix of ethnic and social backgrounds, so did the additional participants, as they were likely to be identified within the socio-economic environment of each participant. Participants were however asked to try and identify representatives of different youth organizations or active youth/ civil society groups. By recruiting 10 shadow participants each, the total number of young people involved per Co-Laboratory reached 200. The shadow participants contributed through virtual means, through the website, the IdeaPrism™ or email, depending on the particular circumstances. In addition, however, the virtual participants were also in charge to reflect on the proceedings and also “broadcast” the progress of the project using their respective channels, i.e., via email, Twitter™, Facebook™, Blogs, YouTube™ movies, etc.

The Future Worlds Center conducted a total of 5 Co-Laboratories throughout the project, each lasting 5 full working days, and taking place in different continents. The major product of each Co-Laboratory was a detailed virtual report with all ideas, clarifications, processes, and final results documented in great detail.

We considered special criteria for the selection of the key participants. For each Co-Laboratory there were about 20 (gender balanced) participants, with approximately 15 participants traveling from other countries and 5 coming from the hosting country. Thus at least 75 participants needed air transportation. Our key concern was to keep gender equality among the participants and to secure that those selected had extensive relevant previous experience, enjoyed recognition among their peers in their respective countries and possessed an extensive and powerful network, which they were able to utilize in order to ensure maximum impact of their work and dissemination of the results and deliverables of the project. Participants were recruited through online application systems, utilizing our global alliances and through social media.

Several positive results were expected and realised from the co-Laboratories. Firstly, increases in knowledge on why youth do not participate in political life, how they envision an ideal system of democracy and governance, and what are major practical actions towards addressing the current problematic situation. This was measured by doing pre- and post-survey of the participants. The evaluations were also assessed shift and/or changes in beliefs and attitudes, changes in motivation and clarity of where they want to go. Secondly, a report was published by FWC after each co-Laboratory. Summaries from these reports were shared on social media. The effectiveness and impact of those reports were measured by collecting viewership such as number of “likes”, “comments” and “shares” on social media channels as well as through evaluating feedback received from corresponding sources. Participants must demonstrate their true commitment by submitting their ideas at least 2 weeks before, in writing. All contributions were well-documented and video clips recorded and whenever possible uploaded to YouTube™ for immediate use by the virtual participants.

After each co-Laboratory participants were motivated to publicize details about the event and also the content and all ideas produced either through traditional media such as newspapers, TV stations and radios and/or through social media such as Facebook™, Twitter™ etc. Moreover, using our IdeaPrism™ App or/and the website they were able to continue developing their ideas, invite more people to join, produce new ideas, and also discuss and further develop existing ideas.

Also, participants contributed to an e-book (Output 3.1) and collectively worked with the FWC Team on gathering and editing the workshop materials. After each Co-Laboratory, a small group of participants committed to setting up regional and/or national social media campaign(s) (Output 2.1) in order to promote the results of their Co-Laboratory. Every social media campaign also had a link and promoted the global project social media page. A single-volume report with all the individual reports and a short summary, which includes all data, has been prepared by FWC.

==Executive Summary==

This paper reports the results of the second of a series of workshops organised by [[Future Worlds Center]] under the auspices of UNDEF. The dialogue was implemented in the context of the Reinventing Democracy in the Digital Era (UNDEF) project. The purpose of this project was to bring together young people from all around the world in an attempt to take apart and reconstruct the concept of democracy. The workshop was organised using the structured dialogic design process (SDDP) approach within the context of a rich web-based communication environment. '''Agnija Kazuša''' is one of the [[Core Participant|Core Participants]] of the [[Reinventing Democracy in the Digital Era - European co-Laboratory]] project.

Her [[Peer Empowerment and Support Mentors]] is [[Mirjam Hasselhorn]].

'''Agnija''' is a certified meditation and mindfulness coach, a writer and a youth worker. Originally from Latvia, she keeps travelling all around the world – from Helsinki to Cairo, from Bogota to Tokyo – to continuously search, learn and discover herself within different cultures, customs and religions.

She started her career as a freelance journalist, working for one of the most popular newspapers in Latvia, "Diena" and other print and online media. Back then, she also had her radio show on an internet radio station, as well as she was an editor-in-chief at the local newspaper in Latvia.

Having gained a Master’s degree in Communication Science, she spent three years teaching English in Egypt, Latvia, Morocco, India and China. She became actively involved in global cooperation and international youth organizations, like AEGEE, AIESEC, European Youth Press, Anna Lindh Foundation and FEJS Latvija, which she initiated and co-founded in 2008. The aim of FEJS Latvija is to allow local journalism students and media makers improve their professional skills and connect with each other. She is currently a member of the Middle East and North Africa Committee (menac).

After her work experience in Egypt, she started a creative writing career, and wrote her first novel "Three Cups of Egypt". It was published in a web portal for women "Sievietes Pasaule". From 2013 until 2015 she took Creative Writing classes at the Literary Academy in Riga. During this period, she wrote her second novel "Bruno" and several short stories; some of them have been published by internet journal "Satori" and awarded and published by the European Institute of the Mediterranean "A Sea of Words" short story contest.

In the beginning of 2015, she became actively involved in the World Peace Initiative Foundation project Peace Revolution that changed her life and opened her eyes to a happier and healthier being thanks to a daily practice of meditation. In November 2015, she became a Peace Architect during a training that she attended in Thailand. Now she has embarked on a mission to share her inner peace with everyone and inspire others on their journey to happiness.

This paper reports the results of the second of a series of workshops organized by [[Future Worlds Center]] under the auspices of UNDEF. The dialogue was implemented in the context of the '''Reinventing Democracy in the Digital Era (UNDEF)''' project. The purpose of this project was to bring together young people from all around the world in an attempt to take apart and reconstruct the concept of democracy. The workshop was organized using the structured dialogic design process (SDDP) approach within the context of a rich web-based communication environment. This Co-Laboratoty was organized using the Structured Democratic Dialogue Process (SDDP) approach within the context of a rich web-based communication environment. It is organized by the Middle East and Northern African Initiative.

In response to the TQ, the 20 participants came up with 59 Actions, which were categorized in 13 clusters. Following the voting process, 30 ideas received one or more votes and were structured to create the influence MAP shown below.
